Muscle size and density are the heart of bodybuilders, but there is more to it than simply having an impressive physique. When someone is creating such a large amount of mass building they naturally run into issues with their diet. The body has a harder time maintaining muscle size. When you lose body fat it becomes harder to maintain muscle size due to the body being programmed to survive and not satisfy the large intake of testosterone that is required to create the perfect bodybuilder physique. Since steroids damage your muscle catabolism, they are used by competitors to preserve their size during the down period between competitions.

The most commonly used AAS in medicine are testosterone and its various esters (but most commonly testosterone undecanoate , testosterone enanthate , testosterone cypionate , and testosterone propionate ), [53] nandrolone esters (most commonly nandrolone decanoate and nandrolone phenylpropionate ), stanozolol , and metandienone (methandrostenolone). [1] Others also available and used commonly but to a lesser extent include methyltestosterone , oxandrolone , mesterolone , and oxymetholone , as well as drostanolone propionate , metenolone (methylandrostenolone), and fluoxymesterone . [1] Dihydrotestosterone (DHT; androstanolone, stanolone) and its esters are also notable, although they are not widely used in medicine. [54] Boldenone undecylenate and trenbolone acetate are used in veterinary medicine . [1]

The concern in the article “NFL serious about doping policy” is regulating the use of anabolic steroids in professional sports especially the NFL. The article explains how the National Football League is getting serious about the regulation of many illegal substances, so the government will not try to intervene and begin to regulate the testing for steroids. The NFL has been trying to enforce that there should be no anabolic steroids use in the league. They are imposing new regulations that are even more severe then before to stop the use of these illegal steroids. “With congress holding hearing on steroids use and the bonds/baseball debacle, the NFL likely wants to show that it can police itself and not have a drug scandal reach monumental and scandalous proportions.” (Ledbetter 1). Therefore, due to increasing government involvement in other sport such as baseball, the NFL is cracking down on the use of anabolic steroids in football. They are doing this to show that they do not condone these actions of taking anabolic steroids and that they are taking this issue extremely serious.
